The reasoning behind creating this blog is to share things with the general public that most folks who are involved in “the dog world” would never willingly admit to “outsiders.”
Why do I see a need for a blog like this? I’ve been active in the online dog community for over a decade, and in the offline dog community for ever longer than that. So far as the online world goes, most forums have a solid moderator base, and each of these moderators has a very set opinion of what they feel is correct and ethical. I’ve lost count of how many times I have seen innocent, honestly concerned members question a breeder about a bad or selfish decision which will result in physical or emotional harm to their pregnant dog (or the puppies themselves). But what do the moderators do? They edit or delete these posts which question the breeder’s ethics and decisions. If the questioning continues, they “lock” or remove the thread completely. Why does this happen? Most of the time, it is because these unethical and ignorant breeders have formed a friendship with the moderator. They have turned the forum into a safe haven for unethical breeding discussion and advertising of inferior quality puppies. Anyone who dares question the lack of health testing, lack of titles or the young age of the bitch is instantly banned (sometimes indefinitely).
Thus, the need for an honest, open exchange of information is definitely needed. The dog community will be better off if truly ethical, educated and experienced people work together to educate the public about the realities of dog ownership and get Joe Public involved in important legislative issues that will truly help our four legged companions.
